An Analysis of strategies and problems in English e-mail writing of employees working for a commercial bank in Bangkok, Thailand

Abstract (English)

This study employed content a mixed-method research design, integrating mix method approaches to explore the issues surrounding English email writing among bank employees and the strategies to address these challenges. The data were collected from 172 English emails sent and received by 63 bank employees between May 1, 2023, and July 31, 2023, to categorize the emails and analyze the challenges and strategies for overcoming them. The data analysis involved descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and comparative analysis using Crosstabs method. The findings revealed the following (1) the most frequently received type of emails among bank employees were informational emails (19.19%), request emails (14.53%), update emails (10.47%), invitation emails (9.88%), and attachment emails (9.30%); (2) a study of the problem grammatical, spelling, and punctuation elements of English email writing indicated that the most common mistakes were mainly adjectives, verbs, and spelling; (3) there was no statistically significant difference in the English email writing styles between males and females; and (4) there was a significant difference in clarity when using online resources to improve email writing. Both male and female employees from diverse backgrounds frequently used translation tools, such as Google Translate, DeepL, Wordvice Al, Alexa Translations, and Bing Microsoft Translation to minimize errors. Employees with less than five years of experience have had greater access problem to these electronic media tools compared to those with over 15 years of experience.
