Abstract (English)

With the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the impact of food safety issues on consumers became essential. People were more aware of goods sold in the market that seemed to have traps in all the places. Safety issues such as expiry date on food, pest pollution, weather problem, and over nutrition started to raise more concerns in food issues. Recently genetically modified food brought great benefits to human beings by speeding up food production, the controversy became intensifying due to the risk of safety. The impact of health and safety cognition on consumers' desire to purchase genetically modified foods became a hot topic for our daily concern. The purpose of this study was to investigate the significant difference in purchase intention on genetically modified foods with different control variables (gender, age, education, occupation, and income) with health and safety cognition; to examine the influencing mechanism of the Chengdu consumers' purchase intention on genetically modified foods based on perceived value, perceived risk, and attitude on health and safety cognition; and to put forward feasible suggestions on the health and safety cognition of genetically modified foods by improving Chengdu consumers' attitudes and perceptions of consumers. Four hundred and forty completed questionnaires of Chengdu consumers were collected through the online WeChat platform by random sampling in February 2023. The results showed that perceived value, perceived risk, and attitude significantly impacted purchase intention on genetically modified foods. Further suggestions in health and safety cognition based on performance value, social value. health value, product knowledge, degree of participation, total personal value, and stakeholder factor would also be essential for the usage of genetically modified foods.
