This research aimed to: 1) study an experimental learning activity in butyl acetate synthesis, 2) compare learning achievements between comparative reactant ratios and traditional experimental approaches, 3) examine students' conceptual understanding of reactant ratios in esterification reactions, and 4) evaluate student satisfaction with the developed learning activity. The sample consisted of 72 second-year undergraduate students enrolled in a basic organic chemistry laboratory course, divided into experimental (P101) and control (P102) groups of 36 students each. The experimental group investigated varying reactant ratios (1:2, 1:1, and 2:1), while the control group used only a 1:1 ratio. Research instruments included achievement tests and satisfaction questionnaires. Results revealed that: 1) the 1:2 volume ratio of acetic acid to butanol yielded the highest percentage yield (90.12 + 2.35%), 2) the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher post-test scores (6.97 ± 1.00) compared to the control group (5.33 + 1.03) at the 0.05 significance level, with improvement rates of 75.52% and 36.17%, respectively, 3) the experimental group showed significantly better conceptual understanding of reactant ratios in esterification reactions, with mean scores of 15.72 + 1.85 compared to 12.08 + 2.14 out of 20 points, and 4) the experimental group reported higher satisfaction levels (4.63 ± 0.35) than the control group (3.86 ± 0.14). These findings indicate that learning through comparative reactant ratio experiments effectively enhances students' understanding and academic achievement compared to traditional experimental methods.
